In 2016 Hampshire County Council ceased running their mobile library service. Two Crawley residents foresaw that the villagers that had used it would struggle to get to the nearest library in Winchester. So, they decided to start a Village Library by begging and borrowing books.
Nine years on and there are well stocked bookcases, in both the Games and Social Club, with over 500 books, DVDS and CDs for all of Crawley residents to borrow. There is a wide variety/genre of books for all ages including (but not limited to), Ladybird, Horrible Histories, non-fiction, fiction, reference books, cookery, and even an illustrated book on The History of Crawley Village!
Following grants from IGAS and Winchester City Council in 2021, and again from Winchester City Council in 2025, the Library is now able to buy newly released books from a local bookshop and also has an iPad and Kindle for villagers to borrow.
The Library is open once a month with teas and cakes provided free, and books are also available to borrow on a Friday evening when the Tavern is open. For dates, times and further information please contact Alison Carey on 01962 776534 and/or see the Crawley Village Facebook Page.
