Crawley Manor

2000 Edition

Valerie Beale and family (12 years in village)

“This house was built in the 18th century as the farmhouse for the Manor Farm, with much surrounding land.  In the 1920s it was taken over by Frederick Pledge, who had been the tutor to the young George Philippi at Crawley Court; he set up a ‘crammer’ for Oxbridge entrants.  He enlarged the house sideways and upwards to accommodate staff and pupils, and put in bathrooms – to save the necessity of the household to go over the road  to the village bath house at the side of Pond House.

After the Second World War the property was divided into two separate establishments and has proved a happy home for many families since then.  All the immediate family, which amounts to twenty – children and grandchildren – much enjoy frequent visits.”

2026 Edition

Bart and Carole Huby (25 years in village)

“We spent 3 years living in Courtyards at the top of the village before moving down the hill to Crawley Manor in September 2003.  Our daughter Maya was we believe the first child born in Crawley in the 21st century, in May 2001, and has lived here with us until recently moving to London. As did our spirited Cairn terrier, Archie, for all his life until he sadly passed away last year.

While we’ve made a number of changes since we moved here, including redesigning the garden and adding solar panels, the house remains a lovely family home.”
